Menulog autodial (Robocall) reported by

Seems like it's a txt to voice conversion. Words (even "Menulog" pronounced weirdly. Offers discount on your next order. Offers a website (which is too mispronounced to be looked up) to opt out. Pity. - I'd really like to opt out.

Robocall from City of Casey council regarding hard waste collection. In a way it's fitting that such a famously shady council are using this shady messaging provider.

University application reminder (Robocall) reported by

robo used my daughter's name & said she needed to complete an application to a university that I didn't quite catch the name of, positions are filling up fast, does she need help to complete or want to cancel. Our daughter is indeed applying to universities, but looking at other reports for caller's number, I've come to the conclusion that it's a scam. Daughter is overseas at the moment anyway.

We are all too nice to people who ring us and purporting to do market research. Instead of being so obliging, it is time we started asking serious questions. When someone claims to be from the Australian Postcode Opinion Poll Survey, we need to start asking, "Why would anyone in their right mind want to do a survey about postcodes?" "What could they possibly want to know?" Perhaps they might ask us if we are satisfied with our postcode or whether we like some postcodes more than others. Fair enough, but then what could they possibly do with that information? If a certain percentage of the population are less than satisfied with their postcode, what are the chances that the authorities would change it? Clearly the Australian Postcode Opinion Poll Survey is the silliest possible name for a genuine poll. And when we all start thinking along these lines, we might have a chance of getting on top of the scammers. Until then, in our willingness to be obliging and helpful, the scammers are having us for breakfast!

Active listener (Unsolicited call) reported by

I smelt a rat just as soon as the caller introduced himself. "I'm from the Australian Postcode Opinion Poll Survey," he said. But the APOPS is not a company name - it's a research method. You cannot be calling from a research method. So I asked him the name of the company that he worked for. Clearly caught off guard, he said, "Park To Me." Oh, really, I thought. That doesn't sound like the name of a reputable polling company (e.g. Gallup, Roy Morgan). At that point I declined to answer any questions. Bravely, he tried to resurrect the call by saying that I could go online and check it out. But sorry, if the caller doesn't properly introduce himself in the first instance, I'm not there. (e.g. one of my favourites is when they say they are calling from Windows - but this is a software program, not a company. A genuine company representative would introduce themselves first by stating the name of their company and secondly by stating the purpose of the call.) In fact, I am thinking that I will no longer participate in any unsolicited research phone calls because there are just too many scammers out there. And, though the scammers are easy enough to detect for the time being, they will get better at it, and before too long it will be hard to separate the scammers from the genuine researchers!

The incoming number 0862784951 The girls English was terrible, she was trying to get me to confirm my details ( name address), she was very pleasant but had no answers & could not give me a number to confirm who she said she was. she kept trying to tell me how much money I made but soon lost interest when I told her we were broke , didn't own our home & are retired . The only upside to this one, she was pleasant , the Telstra scammers are nasty foul mouthed little toads

I just got a call from someone claiming to be from the A. P. O. P. I asked them to hang on until I could check their identity by googling them. They got very cranky with me and hung. Damn......I wish I had to opportunity to call them out as scammers!!!

I did call the girl out as a scammer , she assured me she was legit, She already had my name and address good old white pages . Funnily enough, the first post code she said was from a different state , but she got it right the second time .

He told me that he wanted to ask questions of different age groups to improve the lifestyle of people in Australia, so I started asking him questions and he got agitated. He then asked me what age group I was, I said over 60, he then said I didn't qualify and he hung up on me.

This is a collection scam for various companies, sometimes calling themselves the Australian Postcode Opinion Poll and claiming to be a Federal Department. What they're after is your financial details, primarily to onsell to companies who want to get you to invest your super in their scams. Have told them multiple times that my number should be removed from their list, but they keep coming back every two months or so.

I work for this company and yes we are lead generation we get survey and sell them it is based in th philippines. We call u get surveyed and all of ur important info is already on the system . the owner is an australian .

Bronwynh

Dear Mr Cricket, It makes no difference that the owner of the business is Australian, nor that the company is based in Asia. It is still a SCAM, because the operators pretend to be collecting data for an opinion poll (i.e. people's attitudes and perspectives) when in reality they are collecting demographic, geographic and lifestyle information for an entirely different purpose. According to the Australian Marketing and Social Research Association, data can only be used for the purpose for which it was collected. What you are doing is dishonest, unethical, unprofessional not to mention a gross waste of time for the thousands of people whose lives you interrupt with your calls.

Said they were from the Australian postcode opinion poll. Wanted to confirm my postcode and ask further question. Very suspicious.

Nathan

I let the answering machine take all calls with an unrecognizable number. When the answering machine kicked in there was the tail end of a garbled recording. I tried to call it back several times and it was engaged each time.

Geoff

Phoned me fishing for details about me and my business. Did not know my last name and were trying to confirm it. Very suspicious.

Learn proper grammar and punctuation, Mr Cricket Scammer.

Bronwynh

Mr Cricket, Why do you think that it is OK to interrupt our lives searching for personal information which you subsequently sell to third party companies? In my view, this is a gross invasion of privacy. I take many precautions to I do not belong to any loyalty clubs, frequent flyer programs, do not do online banking, never purchase, nor do I respond to any competitions or subscriptions that require me to hand over my details. I believe that my personal information is valuable. And, if anyone wants my information, they should pay me directly for it. I would be a fool to give it away so that others, who are completely unknown to me, can gain from it. I wish more people would exercise a little more caution about giving away their information. If they did, there would be fewer opportunities for scammers and the number of these pesky calls would gradually diminish.
