Probe group- “acting on behalf of ATO” (Scam call) reported by


This is a scam, said he acted on behalf of the ATO, and wanted personal details. I received a different call from an unknown number a few weeks ago, claiming I owed money. I called the ATO directly and was told I owe nothing. Don’t give out your personal details to these people, call ATO directly!

Probe Group debt collecting for ATO (Debt collector) reported by


Probe Group operates call centres that outsource contracts from ATO and other businesses. If you receive a call from them on behalf of the ATO then the ATO has sold a debt to Probe (either a non-lodgement penalty or outstanding taxes) and Probe is attempting to collect. The Probe collector left a message on my voicemail advising me to call by a date (within 4 days) and to quote a reference number. Many call centres hire English as second language employees so it's understandable that people might believe this is a scam call originating from overseas; Probe has centres in Australia and no doubt hire English as second language employees. This is the second time a message has been left on my voicemail in 2 months; I am not going to call them to give them money! I have no property so there's nothing they can take from me. And if the debt to the ATO was large enough to be serious the ATO would not likely have sold the debt to Probe. Just ignore the call.

The ATO doesn't 'sell' debts to Probe, they just get them to set up payment plans / dates. You can ignore Probe, but be aware your debt is still with the ATO, and not Probe. After a while if Probe hasn't gotten anywhere then the ATO pulls them off the case. You'll get less phone calls, but it's actually bad news because this is when ATO may 'escalate' your case. Just ring the ATO.

Indian accent - not that this is bad but only usual of these scam calls. Wanted TFN and were willing to play back ATO privacy statement. Brazen. Reporting to the ATO.

This number must be part of the range of numbers dedicated to the same call centre - I can see more similar numbers of the same range 3909306xx reported here already, so far as I can see on internet with Probe debt collection agency (The Probe Group) or Alinta Electricity & Gas Credit Department. People did they call you with something new, new scope?
