Company is ORC International (formerly NWC). I worked there in the past. The connection time takes a few seconds (frustrating, I admit); nobody is deliberately hanging up on you. This is one number that is NOT trying sell you something or scam you. Their main task is Govt surveys on travel (but they do other surveys as well). See link below https://www.tra.gov.au/survey Donotcall.gov.au is designed to stop people selling you stuff; charities and market research are allowed to call; the donotcall register used to explain this quite well, but now does a lazy job of it and misleads the public. If I ran a Market Research company, I would not rest until they explain things properly. This website best explains Market Research: https://www.amsrs.com.au/aboutus/information-for-the-general-public/faq-about-market-research-companies You will be talking to a human being; your information will be treated confidentially and goes back to the Govt de-identified. Other number for same company is 03 8256 1755. Finally, remember that this is not a pleasant job; the callers don’t need to be insulted; it costs you nothing to request a call at another time, inquire for more details or politely refuse.

Hi Doug thank you for the information you have posted. Just a couple of things to be mindful off - people are complaining because the calls are relentless - people do not want to give out personal information as there are a lot of scammers out there who work for these so called survey companies - If working for a call centre is not a pleasant job, then change your profession and don't work there. - there is no need for market research companies to continuously phone a person especially when the phone number is privately listed; this means the company has illegally purchased a private phone number

Thanks for the info Doug. It does kind of suck that the Do Not Call Registry does not apply to researchers but that's the law and there's nothing we can do about that. However, it may be legal but calling someone who has clearly expressed a preference not to be called is rude. My policy is not to be rude in response. The people actually making the calls are not at fault. Swearing at them just makes someone's crappy work day a little more crappy and the calls will continue. What I do is lie. I give them randomly incorrect data. I lie about my age. I lie about my family, my income, my home, everything. I try not to give the same answers to different researchers. I encourage everyone to do the same. Don't make the lies obvious. Don't make them extreme. Keep them believable but wrong. The more people do this the more worthless their data will be.
