It said "Hobart" on the call screen (Other) reported by


I had a missed call from this number, it came up as (03) 6107 9624 Hobart (even though 03 is a Victorian or Tasmanian area code) so I called them after hours and a recorded message in a bad English accent said: "For suspended state please call customer support". It sounds like they may be cold calling telemarketers or maybe even scammers. So I just blocked them. Thanks to everyone here for the heads up. ????‍????????????

One of my wife's friends contacted her and told her that there is a social service organization who are offering up to 30% discount on utility bill payment. In fact they offer discount on all sort of payments (Utilities, Rego, Mortgage etc). All we had to do was to provide them with snapshot of bill that they will pay and we had to transfer the difference of actual amount due and the discount (Which was $80 on my monthly Optus Bill). The bill was paid and I transferred the difference to a Westpac account on 3rd of Jun. On 16th of June I received message from Optus that bill payment was failed 'due to bank reason CC Chargeback issue'. I had no choice but to re pay the bill. Scammer had received 'discounted' amount from me and might have made payment to Optus through stolen credit card that resulted in Chargeback.

Block it. Pure scam, "This call is from the Australian Taxation Office..." No, it isn't. People can be a robocaller or a live person behind it, this kind of scam mostly originates from USA, where this type of scam (someone calling on behalf of IRS - Internal Revenue Service, similar to ATO - Australian Taxation Office, https://www.ato.gov.au/) is very common. Block it, report it - police department is already checking this activity. Also, all ATO numbers begin with 13.
