I had called Optus regarding a problem with my bill. They called me back to give an update and left a voicemail message. Scammers may have hijacked this number but my contact was legit.

I believe this is a scam call and I also believe this number was/is a legit Optus number. Let me explain. The way telephone numbers work in call centers is that all out going calls are ported through one number. What scammers can do is spoof their out going number to appear as if it is coming from the call center. This scammer has obviously got my details from somewhere and is trying to trick people into handing over bank details. The call I had was a woman claiming to be from Optus on behalf of Bennifer (I think). She did the usual, tell me she got my details from Optus (I doubt this), that the call is being recorded for training purposes, and asked me to verify my details. I refused and she started reading out some of my details, all superficial things. I refused to clarify or confirm anything else and asked again how she got my details. Once again she claimed via Optus, I now asked her to clear up her companies name and that's when I knew it was a scam. She gave me the name but said it very quickly, I asked for confirmation on spelling and by this stage she was pretending to not be able to hear me (funny how she could hear me before fine). I repeated my question to be answered by "hello?... hello?..." call hung up.

I just received a call similar, offering a discount on my bill. I just said great send me the details in an email, but apparently they can't do that?? So I hung up, called Optus and they knew nothing about it and are investigating the "potential scam"
